Busy Week Approaching for Pleasure Island Athletic Events

GULF SHORES and ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – Continuing the month’s full slate of sporting events, the Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission – along with its numerous partners and sponsors – will end February with two stellar events on Pleasure Island.

Kicking off the week on Monday will be the 1st Annual Gulf Shores Golf Invitational at the Golf Club of The Wharf. Approximately 15 high school teams from around the state will converge on the area for this two-day 36-hole event. Each of the 75 golfers is competing for both team championships and an individual medal. Admission to watch this tournament is free of charge.

Close on the heels of this golf tournament, the area will welcome a second athletic event showcasing 21 high school teams. The Island Cup Soccer Tournament, which is a national tournament, is set for February 26-27 at both the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Sportsplexes. The girls will compete on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Gulf Shores facility while the boys will be coming during the same time frame in Orange Beach.

Then on Saturday, play begins at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex at 8:00 a.m. and concludes at 1:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the Orange Beach Sportsplex will host all semi-final and final games for both boys and girls from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Admission is $10.00 per day or $15.00 for a weekend pass.

Later in March, the sports commission will welcome these upcoming events: the 2010 Dolphin Classic Softball Tournament (March 5-7), 2010 NAIA Gulf Coast Invitational Softball Tournament (March 12-14), 2010 Gulf Coast Classic I Softball (March 15-17), 2010 Baseball Gulf Coast Classic (March 15-18), Orange Beach Soccer Shootout (March 20-21), USSSA Beach Blast (March 26-28) and the 6th Annual American Riviera Classic Volleyball © (March 27-28).
