GULF SHORES and ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – “This is such a victory, and we never even crossed the finish line,” exclaimed Bill Martin, food pantry chairman at the Christian Service Center (CSC). The organization collected numerous boxes of non-perishable food items during an on-going drive held November 28 at the 2009 Kaiser Realty Coastal Half Marathon, 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run.“In early November, we partnered with the South Baldwin Regional Medical Center to host a very successful food drive during the IFA Redfish Championship,” said Beth Gendler, director of sales at the Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission, which produced both the fishing and race events.
The Boat Load of Beans Food Drive netted over 3,000 pounds of food for the CSC.
“With results like this, the hospital representatives and our sports commission decided to repeat these efforts at the November half-marathon,” Gendler said. “Everyone was excited to be able to help an organization that helps so many.”
Other race sponsors participating in the food drive included Tacky Jack’s and title sponsor Kaiser Realty.
“I am blessed to be a part of a community as generous as Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan,” Martin said. “This Christmas season, the generosity of the community abounds!”
