Early Trick-or-Treat Delights with Upcoming Pleasure Island Sporting Events

GULF SHORES and ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – While the caramel-apples finish drying and jack-o-lanterns begin to glow, dash over Pleasure Island for some devilish delight during two pre-Halloween sporting events, both of which are hosted by the Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission.First, the area welcomes over 400 tennis athletes from across the state of Alabama as they compete in the 2009 USTA Southern Combo Doubles Senior/Super Senior presented by Mini, which is set for October 22 - 25. Play in this 4-day tournament will be held daily at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club, The Beach Club, and Gulf Shores’ George C. Meyer Tennis Center. While this group is serving up aces, another group of athletes will be running scared during the 3rd Annual Running Scared 5K, 10K, and 1-Mile Fun Run. The fun begins at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday (October 24) as participants navigate the scenic race course of the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, beginning and ending the race at the trailhead at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.
The top finishing male and female runners in the 10k race will receive cash prizes while age division winners in the 10k and 5k races will receive awards. Also, the top three overall male and female participants will be the winners of the 1-mile fun run.
Adding to the ghoulishly fun will be a pre- and post-race party at the Orange Beach Sportsplex from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Enjoy food (and adult beverages), fun, and live music Lee Yankee and the Hellz Yeah. Costumes are encouraged for both participants and onlookers.
Registration is limited to the first 500 runners. Individuals may either download an application from www.runningscaredonline.com, or register online at www.active.com, keyword search running scared.
Pre-registration (which ends Oct 17) is $25.00 per person. Late registration (October 18-23) is $30.00 and may also be completed during package pickup on Friday, October 23 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the sportsplex. Finally, registration on race day is $35.00 and may be completed from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Sportsplex.
