Precautions Result in Rescheduling of State Track Championships for May 7-9 in Gulf Shores

4/30/2009

GULF SHORES and ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – Plans for a busy athletic weekend along Alabama’s beaches have been slightly altered due to precautions taken by the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA).

According to a statement released late Wednesday night from Steve Savarese, AHSAA executive director, all AHSAA athletic events previously scheduled for this weekend – including the Class 4A-6A state outdoor track championship in Gulf Shores - have been postponed due to two probable swine flu cases in the Huntsville area.

Meanwhile, the 2009 Bike MS: Border Bash will go on as scheduled for May 2nd and 3rd at The Wharf in Orange Beach.

The Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission confirmed this morning that the 2009 AHSAA State Track Championship Classes 1A-6A has been rescheduled for May 7th through 9th in Gulf Shores. Prior to this week, Troy was set to host the track championships for classes 1A through 3A. However due to a scheduling conflict, they will be unable to host this portion of the championship, which has been moved to Gulf Shores.

Also, the 2009 AHSAA Regional Softball Championship is set for May 8th and 9th in Gulf Shores and will go on as scheduled.

If you would like to volunteer for either the newly expanded state track championship or the regional softball championship, please contact Kathryn Emerson at kemerson@gulfshores.com or 251-968-1422.
