AL Gulf Coast Sports Commission Kicks Off May with Action Packed Weekend

GULF SHORES and ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – With the countdown to summer vacation officially underway for millions of school children, the Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission is wasting no time as it hosts two athletic events during the first weekend of May.

High school athletes from across the state of Alabama will converge on the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area for the 2009 AHSAA State Track Championship, which is set for May 1st through 2nd at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. Over 1500 student- athletes representing classes 4A through 6A will compete in 17 events, such as shot put, discus, javelin, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, hurdles, dash and relay. Competition kicks off on Friday at 10:00 a.m. and will continue throughout the day until the last event starts at 3:50 p.m. Resuming play on Saturday at 9:00 a.m., the athletes will battle it out until the awards ceremony starts at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $8.00 per day.

“The AHSAA looks forward to the state track meet,” said Wanda Gilliland, assistant director of the AHSAA. “It is an exciting time for our student athletes and coaches. The AHSAA appreciates the support of the AL Gulf Coast Sports Commission and the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Gulf Shores.”

Meanwhile, cyclists from across the Southeast are raising funds to find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis during the 2009 Bike MS: Border Bash, which will be held May 2nd and 3rd in Orange Beach.

Organized by the Alabama and North Florida chapters of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, this ride will cover 150 miles in two days. Cyclists will begin their journey on both Saturday and Sunday at 7:00 a.m. and meander through scenic southern Baldwin County before returning to The Wharf by 3:00 p.m. each day.
