Multiple Athletic Events to Conclude Jam-Packed March on AL Gulf Coast
3/19/2009
GULF SHORES and ORANGE BEACH, Ala. - Alabama’s beaches are geared up for an active spring break as the Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission welcomes three events during the last weekend of March.
A 21-mile scenic bike ride through the Gulf
State Park is on the agenda for a growing list of cyclists, wishing to raise
money and awareness for the American Cancer Society. Beginning and ending at Tacky Jack’s in Orange Beach,
the 3rd
Annual Cycling the Coast for a Cure ride is presented by Kaiser
Realty and is scheduled for Saturday, March 28 from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
Registration is $25.00 while individuals may also register on the day of the event from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. In exchange for the cyclists’ participation, each will receive a t-shirt, lunch and one raffle ticket for a custom bike. Additional raffle tickets may be purchased for a $500.00 gift certificate from The Bike Shop and other prizes.
Since this is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, cyclists are encouraged to raise $100.00 in donations, which may be turned in on the day of the ride. The participant raising the most money will receive a two-night stay in a two-bedroom, beachfront condo.
“We’re very excited about having Cycling the Coast at Tacky Jack’s this year,” said Amy Mutual, marketing director at Kaiser Realty. “With great cycling, amazing food, live music and tons of prizes, we know this will be the best one yet.”
Partnering for this event are Kaiser Realty and the Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission. Other sponsors include The Bike Shop, At Work Uniforms, Amazing Eyes, Sunny 105.7 Radio, Bayside Signs and Graphics, Gene’s Floor Covering, Bruno’s (in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores), Orange Beach Tacky Jack’s and Lite Mix 99.9 Radio. In addition to this cycling event, Pleasure Island will also host the Orange Beach Soccer Shootout on March 28th and 29th at the Orange Beach Sportsplex. Open to boys and girls teams (ages U10-U18), games are will be played from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. While there is no gate fee, a one-time parking fee of $5.00 will be charged.
“Based on the success of our fall tournament, we decided to add this event to our lineup,” said Fred Garth, tournament organizer. “Last September, over 64 teams participated in the Flora-Bama Showcase, which generated nearly 400 room night for the area. We have similar expectations for this tournament’s success. Currently, we have had over 75 teams sign up for this tournament and are turning teams away because we’ve maxed out the field space.”
Sponsors represented at the Orange Beach Soccer Shootout include Fairfield Inn and Suites, Cosmo’s Restaurant and Bar, Beach Express and The Wharf. For more information, visit www.orangebeachsoccershootout.com.
Concluding the weekend’s events are approximately 60 junior volleyball and eight collegiate teams, who will compete in the 5th Annual American Riviera Classic Volleyball Tournament. Sanctioned by the USA Volleyball Junior Olympic Tournament, the games will be held on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Games will be played at the Gulf Shores High and Middle Schools, Foley High School and the Orange Beach Recreation Center.
